A Kitchen and Deck Transformation in Epsom: Connecting a Villa to Its Garden

Many older Auckland villas were designed in an era when kitchens were tucked away, separate from the main living spaces. Over time, this layout can start to feel restrictive, especially when you want your home to flow effortlessly into the outdoors.

That was exactly the case for this Central Auckland villa renovation, where the homeowners wanted to make better use of their kitchen and deck. The original deck, added in the 1990s, was small and partly leaking into the garage below. The kitchen had narrow French doors that offered only a glimpse of the garden.

Our brief was clear: Fix the problems, improve the indoor-outdoor connection, and create a space that was both practical and beautiful.

Opening Up the Heart of the Home

We started by rethinking how the kitchen connected to the outside world. The French doors were replaced with a 4.6-metre-wide, double-glazed timber bifold door, instantly transforming the space. Natural light now floods into the kitchen, and—when the doors are open—the entire living area flows seamlessly onto the deck.

Inside, a new island bench became the central hub — a place for casual meals, conversation, and connection. The transformation didn’t just change how the space looked; it changed how it felt.

A Deck Made for Living

Outside, we extended the deck to create space for a full dining setup and relaxed seating, turning what was once a narrow walkway into a generous entertaining area. The new Outdure composite decking is durable, low-maintenance, and smooth underfoot, ideal for summer gatherings.

A year later, the homeowners invited us back to update the lower deck with the same Outdure material — a sign that the earlier renovation had met, and exceeded, expectations.

Designed for the Way They Live

Every decision on this heritage renovation came back to one goal: Helping the homeowners enjoy their villa in a way that fits modern life. By improving indoor-outdoor flow, expanding usable space, and addressing long-standing issues, the renovation gave them the freedom to entertain, relax, and spend time outdoors without compromise.

This project is one of many character home renovations Auckland homeowners have trusted us with — where timeless design meets modern living. Whether it’s a villa, bungalow, or contemporary home, we bring the same level of craftsmanship, care, and respect for each home’s story.
